Learn to Skate Classes

15 minutes of off-ice warm-up, 30 minutes of instruction, and 30 minutes of practice time each week for our regular Learn to Skate Classes (Snowplow Sam - Freestyle 6).

Discover, Learn and Play: Introductory levels allow new skaters with no prior skating experience to build confidence while learning to skate.

The adult curriculum is designed for beginner and experienced adult skaters who wish to improve their skating skills. Participation helps promote physical fitness and improve balance and coordination while teaching proper technique. Our program is designed for those looking to skate as an enjoyable part of a fit and healthy lifestyle.


Adult 1-3:

If it's your first time with us register for Adult 1 - Instructors will assess and move you to the appropriate level. Skaters focus on learning introductory skating skills progressing to forward stroking, pumps, and beginning glides.

Adult 4-6:

Skaters focus on forward edges on a circle, forward crossovers, backward one-foot glides, backward pumps on a circle, hockey stops, progressing to backward crossovers, three-turn, forward and backward stroking, beginning power pulls, t-stop, and lunges.

Adult Only Freestyle:

Adult-only Freestyle is also held during this session - a time for our Adult skaters who have passed all levels of LTS to practice. No instruction will be held for those doing freestyle and skaters must abide by all Freestyle rules. Participants and the coaches in LTS classes have the right of way.

Snowplow Sam 1:

Beginners with no previous instruction or experience are introduced to basic skills including falling, standing, marching, and basic gliding. On-ice and off-ice instruction is used to build confidence.

Skaters learn moving dips, basic gliding, backward wiggles, forward swizzles, beginning snow plow stop motion, and two-foot hops in place.

Skaters learn forward skating (8 –10 steps), forward one-foot glide, forward swizzles, backward two-foot glide, backward swizzles, moving forward snowplow stop, and curves.

Snowplow Sam 4:

Skaters learn forward skating, advanced one-foot glide, backward swizzles, rocking horse, two-foot turns in place, and two-foot hops in place.

Classes teach the FUNdamentals of ice skating and provide the best foundation for figure skating and hockey. Six progressive levels introduce forward and backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers, and turns. All classes will be well-structured with the focus on proper skill development taught in a positive, FUN, and social environment. After the completion of Basic 4 skaters are encouraged to purchase their own figure skates and also enroll in our Aspire class if the skater wishes to pursue training as a figure skater and transfer to Learn to Play if a skater wishes to pursue hockey.

Basic 4:

Skaters learn forward outside and inside edges on a circle, forward crossovers, backward pumps on a circle, backward one-foot glides, T-stop and T-push, and forward lunges. After the completion of Basic 4 skaters are encouraged to purchase their own figure skates and also enroll in our Aspire class if the skater wishes to pursue training as a figure skater and transfer to Learn to Play if a skater wishes to pursue hockey.

Skaters learn forward inside mohawk, forward inside three-turn, backward to forward two-foot turns, two-foot spin, and bunny hop. Skaters are encouraged to enroll in our Aspire class along with Basic 6.

Do you dream of jumping high into the air or spinning in a graceful layback? Learn to Skate USA®’s Free Skate curriculum introduces skaters to the beginning elements of higher-level figure skating, including progressive skating skills, transitions, spins, jumps, and more.

At this point in a skater’s journey, he or she can choose to pursue a recreational or competitive approach to figure skating. At this level, skaters should join our Aspire Program and become an introductory member of the Birmingham Figure Skating Club to begin their transition into the sport.

Pre-Free Skate:

Skaters learn backward outside mohawk, forward inside mohawk, forward and backward combinations, forward and backward pivots, 1-foot spins, waltz jump, and mazurkas.

Free Skate 2:

Skaters learn alternating forward outside and inside spirals, backward outside and inside edges, waltz jump-ballet jump sequence, forward and backward crossovers figure eight sequence, beginner back spin, and half lutz.

Free Skate 3:

Skaters learn backward crossovers to back outside edges, alternating Mohawk/crossover sequence, backward inside three turns, Waltz three-turns, advanced back scratch spin, toe loop, and salchow. Waltz jump toe loop combination (bonus).
