Website Newsflash (1)

Join us at the Pelham Civic Complex & Ice Arena for a fun, family-friendly activity! Saturday, January 4th is National Get Out & Skate Day, and the coaches at the Pelham Skate School hope people will get out on the ice and experience the joy of skating!  “Giving it a try is the biggest thing,” says Christian Newberry, skating director at the complex. “We’ve had some pretty good skaters come out of Pelham and Birmingham in the past, and we’re looking to get that happening again.”

On the day of the event, guests can lace up their skates and take part in a free 30 min group lesson on the basics by the complex’s skating instructors. There will also be ice dancing and figure skating exhibitions by skaters in the program. Everything will be followed up by an open skating session for all participants to end the day’s activities. All of these events are Free plus a $2 skate rental fee. Space is limited, so participants are encouraged to pre-register online.

Last year’s Get Out & Skate Day was a massive success with an estimated 150 people having taken to the ice, some for the very first time. Many people made lasting memories watching experienced skaters perform different routines in an up-close environment.

The hope of National Get Out & Skate Day Event is that people may discover a real interest in the sport of hockey or figure skating. For those that do, the Pelham Skate School offers a variety of programs for all ages to grow their skills. “Come out and give it a try!” Newberry says.  “If you like it, we have the program to take you further.”

Participants at the Get Out & Skate event will have an opportunity to sign up for one of those programs, if interested.  A new Learn to Skate session starts the following Monday January 6th. This 8-week session includes instruction, skate rental, and 8 free public skate passes. More information can be found on the registration page

The Learn to Skate Program is just one of the many opportunities to take advantage of the high-level of instruction available at the complex, which consists of both world and national competitors. “The caliber of our staff allows the program to offer a wide variety of classes for all levels, including novice skaters, figure skating, hockey, and advanced instruction,” says Newberry. With age-appropriate curriculum tailored to preschoolers up to adults, the skate school truly offers something for everyone. They also have advanced level classes and teams for students whose skills have progressed and are ready for the next level.

The coaches at the complex who are always looking for new talent to share their experience with. The Get Out & Skate Day event is a great way for that new talent to test the ice!
